Tummy time is a well-known practice for helping babies develop essential muscles, but it doesn’t have to be confined to the floor. Many parents think of tummy time as simply placing their baby on a mat, but there are numerous ways to make it more engaging and developmentally appropriate—especially in the early months. In fact, during the first two months, it’s generally not recommended to have your baby doing tummy time on a flat surface. It’s important to consider alternative strategies that support your baby’s natural development. For example, protecting your baby’s flexed posture—mimicking the in-utero position—is key during this period. Allowing your baby to lie on each side while awake and supervised can be a safe and beneficial way to encourage movement and build strength, without overstressing their still-developing bodies.

Creative Ways to Make Tummy Time Fun and Effective

  • Tummy Time on Your Chest

One of the easiest and most comforting ways to introduce tummy time is by placing your baby on your chest. This position allows your baby to feel close to you while still working on lifting their head and strengthening their neck muscles. As your baby gazes up at you, they’re not only building physical strength but also bonding with you. This method is perfect for newborns who may feel more secure in your arms.

  • Incorporate Elevated Tummy Time

Try using an angled cushion or a specially designed tummy time wedge to provide a gentle elevation. This slightly upright position can be more comfortable for your baby, especially in the early stages, and can help reduce frustration while still strengthening neck and upper body muscles. Elevated tummy time also gives babies a new perspective, which can make the experience more engaging. Just be sure to supervise closely and ensure the cushion is stable and secure.

  • Incorporate Carrying Positions

You can also integrate tummy time into your daily routine by using different carrying positions. For example, holding your baby tummy-down on your forearm (often called the “football hold”) encourages them to engage their neck and core muscles. This is a great way to sneak in some tummy time while you’re moving around the house or running errands.

  • Add Toys and Mirrors for Engagement

When initiated tummy time in a flat surface, to make tummy time more enjoyable, introduce toys or a baby-safe mirror. Place these items just out of reach to encourage your baby to lift their head and reach out. This not only strengthens their muscles but also stimulates their curiosity and cognitive development. Interactive play during tummy time can turn it into a fun activity that your baby looks forward to.

Why Tummy Time Matters for Your Baby’s Development

  • Builds Neck and Upper Body Strength

Tummy time is crucial for developing the muscles in your baby’s neck, shoulders, and upper body. These muscles are essential for milestones like holding their head up, rolling over, and eventually crawling. Regular tummy time helps your baby build the strength they need to reach these important developmental goals.

  • Enhances Motor Skills

As your baby pushes up on their arms and moves their head during tummy time, they’re also developing their motor skills. These movements help improve coordination and prepare your baby for more complex physical activities, such as sitting up and crawling.

  • Encourages Sensory Exploration

Tummy time allows your baby to experience the world from a new perspective. Whether they’re on the floor, your chest, or a soft surface, they’re exposed to different textures, sights, and sounds. This sensory exploration is vital for their cognitive and sensory development.

  • Supports Emotional Bonding

When you interact with your baby during tummy time—whether by talking, singing, or making eye contact—you’re also fostering their social and emotional development. This connection helps your baby feel safe and loved, which is essential for their overall well-being.
